Football players of the Russian national team live observed a minute of silence in memory of the famous sports journalist, who died on March 19 at the age of 53. The causes of death are not officially disclosed. Many colleagues and fans called Vasily Utkin a cult figure for the Russian commentary workshop, despite the fact that he had not worked on federal television channels for several years. Kommersant FM sports columnist Vladimir Osipov notes that there really is no star of this magnitude in the domestic industry.
You can treat Vasily Utkin as you like, but hardly anyone would risk not admitting that he changed Russian sports journalism in the 90s. Then this genre lived in cliches, and Utkin, with his unusually bright presentation of material, spontaneity, irony and, of course, sincerity, simply made half the country fall in love with him. The other half did not like him, perhaps even hated him, but Vasily Utkin was known to everyone without exception. His famous “play football” immediately became popular among the people, and his speech patterns were discussed by fans after almost every report.

Vasily Utkin’s talents were also recognized by his colleagues in the commentary department, which is extremely rare. Although he himself, while listing his merits, did not talk about bright reports: “I am actually a teacher. This is my greatest talent. “I have two talents: I’m an educator, and I’m absolutely fucking terrible at writing obituaries.”
Almost all commentators who work on television in one way or another studied with Vasily Utkin. Although it was difficult, one of his best friends, sports journalist Sergei Mikulik told Kommersant FM: “He is a very complex person, to be honest. Like, probably, many talented people. Vasya was tough. But he himself pulled out several generations of students. There was a strict selection to ensure that these were really talented people with whom it would be interesting to work. He kept the bar that Vasya set for himself with others.”
After Utkin lost his job at the federal channel, he retrained as a blogger, broadcast on the Internet with his football club and even became the owner of the Egrisi team from the Media Football League. By the way, he didn’t leave his commentary work: for example, he had to fly to Almaty for the match of the Kazakhstan national team against Greece.
Utkin’s problem in recent years has been excess weight. The immense dimensions have caused numerous insults online and beyond. Now, of course, they won’t remember this, the chairman of the sports commentators association, Alexei Efimov, is sure: “Such people are always deified and persecuted at the same time. Now, of course, they will mostly sing his praises, and those who did not love him and do not love him will shut up, at least for a while, and thank God. One of the main nominations in our professional award “Voice of Sports” will definitely be named after Vasily Utkin.”
The Russian national football team honored the memory of Vasil Utkin. Words about his uniqueness and genius were spoken by many famous players. But, despite this, the heads of federal channels did not tolerate the complex nature of the commentator. It just so happens that they are constantly trying to get it into our heads that no one is irreplaceable. But if you look at the truth, you have to admit: after Vasily Utkin moved away from big reports, the commentary department never received a star of this level.
