Football referees will be required to explain their decisions after the intervention of the video replay system. The innovation will be tested in matches of the Russian Premier League, tournament organizers said. Kommersant FM sports commentator Vladimir Osipov was looking into whether this would help avoid judicial scandals.
Recently, not a single round of our football championship can go by without high-profile refereeing stories. Moreover, even the appearance of the VAR system did not correct the situation. The thing is that referees working in the field and referees who follow the match on monitors interpret certain violations differently, football expert Roman Shirokov is sure: “If they understood football in the same way, then it would be possible to something to say. The referee on the field understands football one way, but the VAR understands it differently. That’s all”.
It would seem that now that the judges will have to announce their decisions to the entire stadium, and even immediately after the episode, the problem will be solved. But it was not there. The thing is that the referees will not explain why they recorded this or that violation, but will only announce it to the entire stadium, as has long been practiced in hockey. Leonid Kaloshin, an expert in the field of refereeing and VAR of the project, told Kommersant FM about this:
“I emphasize that in this experiment we are talking about the announcement of the final judicial decision, and not about a detailed explanation by the judge of why this or that decision is made. If we regard football as a show and entertainment, then this is a completely understandable story, it is received with a bang. From a practical point of view, namely understanding the process and logic of making a judicial decision, there will be nothing new. Therefore, I recommend that everyone who loves football as a game approach the upcoming experiment calmly, without expecting anything beyond the bounds, so that later they do not use the classic expression: “Your expectations are your problems.”
In addition, you need to understand that the referees’ comments are an experiment being conducted by FIFA and the International Council of Football Associations. This means that everything can end at any moment. Moreover, Russia is not the first country where judges have to announce their decisions to fans. This is already working in Portugal and Mexico. And if you believe the words of RFU President Alexander Dyukov, the experiment has worked well. So from the point of view of the leaders of our football, it will be better. It’s difficult to argue with this, but what has taken root elsewhere doesn’t always work for us. Football manager Yuri Belous is sure that it is better not to give the referees their say:
“Of course, you can try, but it’s better to improve the quality of training and acquisition of the judicial profession, because this is a serious story. Moreover, the more you comment, the more “arrows” there will be, which may even entail reputational losses for the judiciary.”
As for the points that the referees will have to comment on, everything is simple. These are all controversial situations in which the referee went to the monitor to make a decision, as well as when VAR recorded an offside position, or when the system determines where the rules were violated – in the penalty area or outside it. Immediately after the resumption of the season, referees will announce their decisions only in a few matches, and by the end of the season the option will be available to absolutely all arenas. And not only in the RPL, but in the Russian Cup. Whether all this will add fire to our football will be clear after the start of the national championship on March 1.
