Pavel Volchkov, head of the MIPT Genomic Engineering Laboratory, virologist, told “Gazete.Ru” about the main features of the Kraken coronavirus strain.
According to Volchkov, the Kraken’s F486P mutation makes it even easier for the virus to be fixed in cells, as well as to avoid neutralizing antibodies.
But this does not mean that the Kraken will bring the same outbreak of disease as it did with the Omicron. It is likely that the new strain will cause some harm, but Omicron immunity is not completely powerless against the Kraken.
Volchkov warned that the variants of the coronavirus that are evolving in China right now could be much more dangerous. The virologist appeals to the theory of large numbers, stating that it is from China that a new dangerous strain of coronavirus can come to Russia.
“Sooner or later, we will have a variant of SARS-CoV-2 that is far removed from the currently persistent strains,” concluded Pavel Volchkov.
