Temperatures in the Russian capital will turn positive in the second half of Sunday. The thaw may linger in Moscow for at least 3-4 days. Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of the Russian Federation, told RIA Novosti about this.
He explained that a powerful influx of heat will occur along the periphery of the cyclone that has formed over the Norwegian Sea. At the same time, the thermometers on the evening of December 17 may rise to +3 degrees.
Vilfand warned that at night the temperature will become negative. This means that the snow will repeatedly melt and freeze. The risk of ice formation will increase.
Earlier it became known that after extreme snowfalls, record snowdrifts grew in Moscow. Their height at the capital’s reference weather station – VDNKh – reached 38 centimeters. This is the maximum value for mid-December in the entire almost 150-year history of meteorological observations. At the same time, in the south of the metropolis the depth of snow cover on Friday morning was 49 centimeters.
