Vilfand said that weather forecasters have six seasons a year

Moscow is preparing for winter: until the end of this week there will be low, leaden clouds and a lot of precipitation – rain and sleet. Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, spoke about this at the MK press center.
– This is due to the fact that during the day the temperature is above zero, but at night frosts are possible. During the day we expect +4-5 degrees, at night around zero.
This is due to the fact that at altitude the temperature is already negative, snow forms there. It falls and turns into rain.
On Saturday, October 21, it will be cloudy with clearings, perhaps sunshine, but the temperature at night will drop to minus 5 degrees. At the beginning of next week, the cyclone will return, there will again be light precipitation and cloudiness, the expert explains.
According to Vilfand, this season is called “pre-winter”: from the second half of October to mid-December, nature prepares for winter. It is characterized by low blood pressure, and the season is considered depressive due to lack of sun.
“It was people who came up with the idea that spring should begin on March 1, although on this day the snowdrifts are at their maximum height. Other seasons are natural for nature, and we, weather forecasters, divide the year into six seasons,” Vilfand added.
It is not yet possible to make a weather forecast for the November holidays two weeks in advance, Vilfand added. According to the expert, modern science is not ready for such long-term planning.
– I think we will come to this in a few years, but this is not possible yet. We can only issue forecasts for short periods of time. The forecast for the next day is correct with a success rate of 96% and, by the way, the weather forecast six hours ahead will be more accurate than two hours.
The meteorologist added that some modern sites are ready to give the weather even a month in advance, but this is unprofessional. Over the past decades, the quality of weather forecasts has improved significantly, but one cannot ask for the impossible.
