Vilfand called scientists’ forecast of abnormal heat in 2024 premature
Scientists’ forecast about abnormal heat in 2024 premature. At the same time, 2023 really became the hottest year in the history of observations. In conversation with the radio “TVNZ” Scientific Director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia Roman Vilfand said that the cause of this was the El Niño climate phenomenon.
He explained that this phenomenon leads to significant warming of water, first at the equator of the Pacific Ocean, and then spreads to the entire world ocean.
“There is a transfer of heat from the ocean to the atmosphere. Due to the different heat capacities of water and air, the heat is very significant, which affects the atmosphere,” the forecaster explained.
Vilfand also said that global temperatures in the past year were also affected by greenhouse gases, the concentration of which will increase this year, which could make 2024 the warmest. Despite this, a researcher at the Hydrometeorological Center, the forecast that a new record will be set is premature. The exact picture, according to the scientist, will emerge only after the El Niño effect stops. That is, after April.
