Figure skater Kamila Valieva demands that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) restore her gold medal at the Russian Championships and not invalidate any of her results, since she violated anti-doping rules unintentionally. In December 2021, WADA found traces of a banned drug, trimetazidine, in Kamila Valieva’s sample.
The hearings will be held behind closed doors in Lausanne on September 26, 27 and 28, with September 29 set as a reserve day. Valieva will not be at the meeting; the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) will present testimony via video conference.
“Ms. Valieva demands from CAS a decision that it does not have jurisdiction over the claims of WADA, ISU and RUSADA, since the doping violation has not been proven, and the result at the Russian Championship must be restored,” it says release CAS. The period of disqualification, in Ms. Valieva’s opinion, should be no more than two years.
According to a press release, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is asking CAS to impose a four-year ban on Kamila Valieva for her doping violation and to invalidate all of her results starting December 25, 2021. The International Skating Union (ISU) is seeking a decision to punish the athlete with a four-year period of ineligibility or a two-year period starting December 25, 2021, as well as the cancellation of her results. RUSADA, in turn, is seeking CAS to overturn the finding that the athlete violated anti-doping rules, and her punishment may include or be limited to a warning.
Kamila Valieva stated that trimetazidine could have entered her body accidentally. On January 13, 2023, following an investigation, RUSADA stated that the skater had violated anti-doping rules, but was not guilty of this and did not commit any negligence.
