USA Today: US will give Kyiv Abrams without “sensitive” technology

The American authorities plan to transfer Abrams tanks to the Ukrainian military without a number of functions related to “sensitive” technologies, informed sources say.
As USA Today writes on Monday, May 8, Washington is ready to continue helping Kiev, but fears that during the hostilities, Western weapons and the technologies with which they were created will end up in the hands of the Russian military.
To eliminate this possibility, the United States decided to modernize the Abrams, intended for transfer to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), the sources said. However, it is not clear what kind of technologies we are talking about.
USA Today recalls that Washington’s supply of tanks to other countries in a simplified version is a common practice. Combat vehicles with advanced functionality remain at the disposal of the US military.
American instructors, meanwhile, are preparing to begin training the Ukrainian military to operate Abrams tanks in Germany. US Department of Defense spokesman Patrick Ryder emphasized that these vehicles will not be involved in hostilities, and also indicated that they have been converted.
Some Western experts believe that even in case of transfer of tanks to Kyivrequested by the Ukrainian authorities, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will not receive the desired leverage on the course of the conflict with Russia.
