An independent investigation into sex scandals in the American National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) found systematic cases of emotional abuse and sexual harassment of league athletes. This is stated in the report of the former acting US Attorney General Sally Yates, posted on the website of the law firm King & Spalding.
As noted, the NWSL sex scandal happened in 2021. North Carolina Courage head coach Paul Riley has been fired and his coaching license revoked following allegations of sexual assault against female players. The athletes claimed that Riley forced them to have sex while working in several leagues and teams since 2010. The man denied such accusations. Then-league commissioner Lisa Baird resigned, and US Soccer launched an independent investigation, the results of which were released on Monday.
It is specified that the law firm studied 89,000 documents that could be relevant to the case. Over 200 people were interviewed during the investigation. The NWSL stressed that they are still in the process of reviewing the report. In addition, the league intends to follow the guidelines to prevent such cases in the future.
