US urges Zelensky to swallow bitter pill for NATO

WSJ: Zelensky will have to make a deal with Russia for a chance to join NATO
William Galston, a columnist for the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal, explained in his article that the principle proclaimed by the West to help Ukraine “as much as needed” means only support within the framework of the current counteroffensive.
The author believes that no matter how the offensive operation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine ends, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will have to compromise, because only the end of hostilities will open the way for Kyiv to join NATO.
Galston predicts that by the end of the year there will be strong support for a ceasefire as a first step towards peace talks. According to the observer, some Eastern European countries will doubt the wisdom of such a course, but will not be able to oppose the general voice.
“This harsh reality will be a bitter pill to swallow for most Ukrainians,” Galston said, advising Volodymyr Zelenskyy to think about getting the best deal he can get from allies while support remains high.
