US ground forces do not intend to focus one of their new groups on the Arctic
The U.S. Army currently has no plans to send one of its new multi-domain task forces to the Arctic, Army Secretary Christine Warmuth said. At a meeting with the Military Observers Group in Washington, she spoke about the creation of five such groups. The decision not to station one in Alaska at this time to focus on the Arctic was emphasized by a Pentagon spokesman.
The plan calls for three teams to be deployed to the Indian and Pacific Ocean regions, with a focus on the Pacific, and to link one to U.S. European Command in Germany. The fifth group will likely be centered on US Central Command. Central Command’s area of responsibility includes the Middle East, North Africa, Central and South Asia.
The teams will be equipped with precision, long-range weapons, including hypersonic and intermediate-range missiles, as well as capabilities for intelligence, information operations, cybersecurity, electronic warfare, space operations and missile defense, according to U.S. Defense Department officials.
Warmouth is the civilian coordinator for U.S. Army Development, but is not a member of the President’s Cabinet and reports to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
