US to deploy elite airborne division to EU

The United States will deploy troops of the elite 101st Airborne Division to Europe as part of strengthening the eastern flank of NATO, the US representation in NATO announced on Twitter. About 2,400 soldiers will be deployed in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia “to protect the eastern flank of NATO.”
“After 80 years, the 101st Airborne Division, known as the Screaming Eagles, is returning to Europe,” the statement said.
At the end of June, US President Joe Biden and other leaders of NATO member countries announced a significant increase in troops along the eastern border of the alliance. According to him, the US will establish a permanent headquarters in Poland for the Fifth Army Corps, which took part in both world wars, the operation in Kosovo and the “war on terror”.
In addition, the United States will support a rotating brigade in Romania, reinforce troops deployed in the Baltic States, deploy two squadrons of F-35 fighter jets to the UK, and deploy additional air defense assets in Germany and Italy.
On June 29, NATO countries approved a new strategic concept for the development of the alliance, in which Russia is recognized as “the most dangerous and direct threat to NATO security, as well as to “peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region.” At the same time, NATO claims that it does not seek confrontation with Moscow and does not pose a threat to the country. The block expressed its readiness to maintain channels of communication with the Russian Federation to reduce risks and prevent escalation.
