US soccer head coach under fire for 31-year-old incident
US Soccer has released a statement regarding the investigation into US men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter in connection with an incident in 1991 in which he hit his future wife.
Berhalter and his wife Rosalind released a joint statement admitting that the “shameful” incident took place 31 years ago. In this statement, Berhalter claims that he has learned from this.
“In the fall of 1991, I met my soul mate. I had just turned 18 and was a freshman at the University of North Carolina when I met Rosalind. One night, while we were drinking at a local bar, Rosalind and I had a heated argument that continued outside, where I kicked her in the legs. There is no excuse for my actions that night; it was an embarrassing moment that I regret to this day,” said the head coach of Team USA. He added that they did not apply to law enforcement agencies at that time, and that he voluntarily sought advice in order to help himself “learn, grow and improve.”
After this incident, they separated for seven months before reconciling. Recently, Gregg and Rosalind, raising four children, celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Berhalter said the investigation began after an unnamed individual contacted US Soccer during the World Cup in Qatar last month, saying he had information that would “drive everyone crazy.”
US Soccer management thanked Berhalter and his wife for voluntarily speaking out about the incident. As a result, Berhalter is likely to be temporarily suspended from managing the national team, and US Soccer will soon announce who will lead the team’s January training camp in the coming days.
At the last World Cup 22 in Qatar, the Americans lost to the Netherlands in the 1/8 finals.
