The administration of US President Joe Biden has imposed restrictions on the export to Russia and China of a number of graphics processing units (GPU) manufactured by Nvidia and AMD, which are used in supercomputing and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. We are talking about chips A100 and H100 Nvidia and MI250 AMD. As conceived by Washington, the measure will avoid the use of chips for military purposes.
Nvidia and AMD, among other foreign vendors, announced the suspension of equipment deliveries to Russia almost immediately after the start of the CBO in Ukraine in February-March. In a conversation with The New York Times (NYT), Nvidia spokesman said that at the moment it does not ship products to Russia, but it has many customers in China. And in April 2022, Nvidia announced the opening of an office in Armenia.
Nvidia and AMD will now have to apply for export licenses to sell products to specific customers. According to the source of the NYT, in recent weeks, a number of other IT companies have received similar letters demanding to limit exports (it is not specified which ones).
