US House Speaker to Meet with Taiwan’s Chief of Staff

Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy has confirmed that he plans to meet with Taiwan’s chief of staff Tsai Ing-wen this year, writes Bloomberg.
Earlier, the Financial Times reported that such a meeting could take place in California.
The agency noted that McCarthy does not exclude that he himself will visit Taiwan. At the same time, he noted that the planned meeting “has nothing to do” with the planned trip. “It’s like going to Taiwan,” he told reporters.
Earlier, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCall said that McCarthy was planning a trip to the island either in 2023, but later, or next.
Bloomberg notes that the decision to hold the meeting in the United States was made so that the congressman’s visit to Taiwan would not cause an extremely harsh reaction from Beijing, as happened with Nancy Pelosi’s trip.
However, observers believe that the very fact of the meeting between McCarthy and Inwen will already provoke a protest from the PRC.
Beijing emphasized after the announcement of McCarthy’s plans that “China has always opposed any form of official exchanges between countries establishing diplomatic relations with China and the Taiwan region of China.” The Chinese Foreign Ministry also said that US representatives “must abide by the One China principle” and “should not take actions that affect China-US relations and undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
