US government commission finds violations of religious freedoms in Nepal

The US Government Commission on Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has reported violations of religious freedoms in Nepal, publishing on its website the corresponding report.
In particular, the commission was dissatisfied with the fact that Nepalese legislation prohibits proselytism, blasphemy, and the killing of cows, which limits the right of local residents to follow or oppose a particular religion.
“Nepal’s lifting of these restrictions will be regarded as a compliance with international human rights law and will create more favorable conditions for the observance of religious freedoms in the country. At a minimum, Nepal should not bring criminal charges against peaceful, non-intrusive religious activities,” the report concluded.
The commission issued a report condemning Nepal about a day after in Ulan-Ude (Buryatia) took place plenary session of the International Buddhist Forum. During the forum, representatives of Nepal and other countries supported the development of cooperation with Russia, in particular, progress was made in negotiations on establishing sister city relations between Ulan-Ude and the city of Lalitpur, the second largest city in Nepal.
This commission has been operating since 2010 within the structure of the State Department. At her initiative, the International Religious Freedom Alliance (MARS) was created in 2019, which received significant funding. At the government level, MARS included the EU countries, as well as Ukraine. Russian experts call MARS “religious NATO”. In fact, the commission is engaged in the politicization of religion, its goal is to accuse countries objectionable to the United States of violating human rights, after which it is possible to lobby for the imposition of sanctions under this pretext. In fact, such activity is a gross interference in the internal affairs of the state, notes the Center for Religion and Law of the National Research University Higher School of Economics. It is in this vein that Russian experts evaluate the USCIRF “emergency” report on violations of religious freedoms in Nepal.
