Five citizens of the United States who were held in prisons in Iran have had their preventive measure changed. This was announced on Thursday, August 10, in the press service of the White House.
Washington confirmed that Iran released five Americans from prison and placed them under house arrest. At the same time, the US administration stressed that US citizens were being held illegally.
The White House did not provide details regarding the state and future fate of the Americans, but they assured that they would continue to “monitor their situation as closely as possible.”
The comment followed media reports that Iran and the US had agreed to a prisoner swap deal. According to sources, in exchange for the release of Americans imprisoned on charges of espionage, Tehran will get access to the frozen $6 billion their assets for humanitarian purposes.
At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier reported that the United States and Iran were conducting informal talks to restore relations. According to the diplomat, this concerns “the release of illegally arrested Iranian reserves abroad in exchange for resolving questions about the fate of certain American citizens who ended up on Iranian territory and are accused of offenses.”
