The authorities have charged Russian citizen Sergei Cherkasov with espionage and fraud. This was reported by the United States Department of Justice. At the same time, the Russian citizen himself is currently in one of the Brazilian prisons.
The department said that Cherkasov arrived in this country in 2012 and began to impersonate the Brazilian Victor Muller Ferreira. In 2018, he entered graduate school at a university in the District of Columbia and moved to the United States. Two years later, Cherkasov, a Russian, left the United States, while, according to the Ministry of Justice, he continued to receive data on US foreign policy through connections in academic circles, which he allegedly handed over to Russian intelligence.
In addition, the department reported that Cherkasov allegedly planned to get a job at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, but was refused. After that, he returned to Brazil. In Brazil, a man was detained for fraudulently using visas, electronic funds and banking funds in the name of Ferreira.
