US approves sale of HIMARS missiles to Australia

The US authorities have agreed a deal to sell Australia 22 HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) and related equipment.
The amount of a potential contract, the conclusion of which was authorized by the Agency for Security Cooperation of the US Department of Defense, could be $975 million.
Australia, along with the United Kingdom and the United States, formed the AUKUS alliance, within which the countries are expanding military cooperation. US Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth said that the United States views the territory of Australia as test site for hypersonic weapons within the framework of the strategic partnership AUKUS. The politician noted that Australia’s contribution to the AUKUS alliance should be both financial and practical.
Igor Kostyukov, Chief of the GRU of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, warned that the White House plans to form a network of controlled blocs in the Asia-Pacific region to suppress the Russian Federation and China. At the same time, Russian leader Vladimir Putin did not rule out that NATO forces may link up with AUKUS in the Asia-Pacific region.
