General Charles Brown, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, held talks with Chinese People’s Liberation Army General Liu Zhenli. This is the first dialogue of this level between countries in a year and a half.
During the meeting, the American and Chinese generals discussed the importance of working together to “manage competition responsibly,” avoid miscalculations and maintain open and direct lines of communication, the Pentagon press service said.
The Pentagon emphasizes that this meeting comes against the backdrop of an increase in the number of “risky and aggressive” interceptions of American aircraft in international airspace by the Chinese military.
The United States recorded more than 180 incidents of forced and risky Chinese air interceptions of American aircraft in the region from 2021 to 2023, according to the latest report on China’s military power. The Pentagon notes that this number exceeds the number of similar incidents over the past decade.
