US Ambassador Lynn Tracy visited Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich, accused of espionage, in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center in Moscow, the US Embassy in the Russian Federation reported.
Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Ryabkov previously said that the Russian Federation satisfied the US request to visit Gershkovich.
The embassy’s social media post X said that “Ambassador Tracy visited the unjustly detained journalist.”
On March 30, the FSB announced that Gershkovich was detained in Yekaterinburg on suspicion of espionage in the interests of the American government. According to the Russian intelligence service, the journalist collected information in Russia that constituted a state secret “about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.”
Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the detention of Gershkovich, noted that he was caught red-handed.
