US Ambassador to the UN commented on the situation in Gabon

Washington condemns the actions of the military in Gabon, but calls to refrain from making decisions at the level of the UN Security Council on the subject of a coup in this country. This was stated by US Permanent Representative to the World Organization Linda Thomas-Greenfield, writes TASS.

“We do not have all the details, but we are consulting with other members of the UN Security Council about what actions we can take,” the permanent representative said. She recalled that after the military coup in Niger, the council “made a strong statement on this situation.”

The permanent representative clarified that no action is planned to be taken until there is no exact information. “But let me be clear – we condemn any action by the military to take power by force,” she said.

The military coup in Gabon took place on August 30 after the announcement of the results of the presidential elections, in which the incumbent President Ali ben Bongo Ondimba won 64.27% of the vote. The opposition announced the falsification of the elections. It was reported that after the closing of polling stations and the beginning of the counting of votes, the Gabonese authorities imposed a curfew and turned off the Internet. As the media wrote, the president was placed under house arrest, and several members of the government were also arrested.

Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that Russia is closely monitoring the situation in Gabon, it is “a subject of deep concern.” The Russian Foreign Ministry recommended that Russians refrain from traveling to an African country.
