Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay have applied to host the 2030 World Cup

Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay have officially submitted a joint bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. In case of victory in the competition, Uruguay will receive the right to host the World Cup exactly one hundred years after the first World Cup, which was also held in Uruguay.

“This is the dream of an entire continent,” said Alejandro Dominguez, president of the South American Football Confederation. “Of course, there will be many more world championships, but the 100th anniversary of the tournament is only celebrated once, and it must return to its homeland,” Dominguez added at a conference at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo. It was at this stadium in 1930 that Uruguay, being the host country of the first ever World Cup, won the tournament, defeating the Argentina national team (4:2) in the final.

In turn, in Chile and Argentina, competitions were held in 1962 and 1978, respectively.

Dominguez noted that FIFA has more than good reason to accept the application of the South American countries. In 2026, the tournament will be held for the first time in three countries: the USA, Canada and Mexico. At the same time, the 2030 World Cup could be the first to be held in four countries.

The application of Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay will compete with the joint application of Spain and Portugal. The final selection of the winner will likely take place at the 74th FIFA Congress in 2024.
