UOC stopped commemorating Patriarch Kirill in liturgies because of his position on the conflict in Ukraine

The canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) no longer commemorates Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia in liturgies. This is due to the position of the patriarch, who did not condemn Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. This was stated by the Deputy Moderator of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC), Metropolitan Nifon of Targovishte.
“I don’t know all the details, but I do know one thing: the pro-Moscow jurisdiction in Ukraine has already refused to commemorate the name of Patriarch Kirill at the liturgy. You know why – because Patriarch Kirill did not clearly condemn the war in Ukraine. But, as you know, there are always nuances of interpretation, and we must know the situation exactly in order to judge it,” Metropolitan Niphon said after the WCC assembly (TASS quote).
The theme of the 2022 OCV Assembly is “Christ’s love moves the world towards reconciliation and unity.” At the end of the assembly, a statement was drawn up calling for an end to hostilities in Ukraine and the start of peace talks. The statement called for “abandoning the misuse of religious language and power” to “justify hatred”. The delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church did not support the document in the voting.
May 27 UOC condemned Russian special operation, calling it a violation of the commandment “Do not kill”, and declared independence from the Russian Orthodox Church. Patriarch Kirill said that the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine is fueled by external forces, trying to divide “one people.” After the representatives of the UOC ceased to commemorate in liturgies, the patriarch declared the need for the church to free itself from the interference of secular authorities in its affairs.
