United Russia banned foreign agents from participating in party voting

The General Council of United Russia banned Russian citizens recognized as foreign agents from participating in the party’s preliminary votes. The restriction also applies to persons affiliated with foreign agents.

“The applications of foreign agents, if any were registered to participate in the preliminary voting, will be canceled by the regional organizing committees of the procedure,” United Russia reported in Telegram channel.

At the end of March, United Russia opened applications for preliminary voting, at which the party will select candidates to participate in elections to regional and city authorities. They will take place in September 2024.

Previously, the head of the party “A Just Russia – For Truth” Sergei Mironov statedthat the faction has submitted to the State Duma a bill banning foreign agents from participating in elections at any level. The text of the document, which Kommersant has at its disposal, states that the majority of people recognized as foreign agents live outside Russia and take an anti-Russian position. Ministry of Justice March 29 reportedthat the status of a foreign agent does not prevent one from participating in elections.
