UN working to remove barriers to Russian fertilizer exports

The UN is looking to remove barriers to food and fertilizer exports from Russia, Rebeca Greenspan, secretary general of the World Organization for Trade and Export Development Conference, said during a press conference of the global response team to the food, energy and financial crises. “With regard to Russia and the facilitation of trade in food and fertilizers from the Russian Federation, we are working hard on this. We are trying to remove the existing obstacles in the field of finance, insurance, transportation,” Greenspan said. According to her, “some clarifications” have been received from the United States and the European Union about the sanctions imposed, which will allow businesses to understand the conditions for the implementation of this activity.

According to the secretary general of the conference on trade and export development, the UN is interested in increasing exports in these areas and “returning interest” of business in them – so that the private sector sees opportunities to resume exports. “We would like more ships to call at Russian ports to export food and fertilizers,” she added.

On April 8, the EU, within the framework of the fifth package of sanctions against Russia, limited the import of Russian fertilizers. From July 10, quotas for the import of potassium chloride in the amount of 837,570 tons and complex fertilizers containing potassium – 1.6 million tons will be valid for one year.
