UN: there are no safe conditions for the investigation of the attack on the Elenovka pre-trial detention center

The UN has set up a team to investigate the attack on the Yelenovka pre-trial detention center, but this team cannot start work due to the lack of safe conditions, CNN reports, citing the representative of the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric.

“Despite the fact that Russia and Ukraine are requesting an independent investigation, the UN believes that the situation around the prison is not safe for access without proper guarantees,” the statement said.

Dujarric also reportedly announced new appointments to the group, which included a diplomat from Iceland and a police officer from Niger.

On July 29, the pre-trial detention center in Yelenovka (DNR) came under attack from the Ukrainian side with the help of HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems supplied to Ukraine by the United States. 53 people were killed, 71 prisoners were injured. Deputy Defense Minister Oleksandr Fomin said that the location of the prisoners in this pre-trial detention center was agreed with the Ukrainian side.

Earlier, the UN Secretary General announced the launch of a mission to establish the facts of the shelling of the Yelenovsky pre-trial detention center, which should establish the facts and report them to the governments of the Russian Federation and Ukraine. According to Guterres, the UN mission to investigate the events in Yelenovka is currently working to obtain security guarantees and unhindered access to the scene. Moscow and Kyiv have already received documents regulating the functions and powers of this mission, as well as the composition of its participants.

Earlier, Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, said that Russia would ensure the arrival of international experts and journalists in Yelenovka.
