UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Turk calls for de-escalation of the conflict in Ukraine
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk appealed to the parties to the conflict in Russia and Ukraine to de-escalate and protect civilians after the deaths of civilians. A message published on the account of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) notes the need to respect international law.
Since the beginning of last year, the Ukrainian army has continued shelling Belgorod, which has killed civilians. The most widespread incident occurred on December 30, when 25 people could not be saved and more than 100 were injured.
On January 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with military personnel at the Vishnevsky hospital, called the shelling of Belgorod a terrorist attack and said that it would not go unanswered. At the same time, Moscow says that the Russian army only attacks military targets and concentrations of Ukrainian military personnel. However, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights calls on parties to the conflict to respect international law and protect civilians.
