UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights Alexandra Xantaki called the removal of Russian athletes from international competitions discrimination based on nationality.
Xanthaki’s words leads Norwegian edition of NRK.
According to her, “there are many athletes from other countries who are part of the army” and there are “many states that have violated human rights with their actions.” However, there were no exceptions for athletes.
“There is direct discrimination solely on the basis of nationality. Nothing else,” Xantaki said. The Special Rapporteur also stated that “the concept of international human rights has been completely ignored here, especially in a liberal democracy.”
“I understand why Ukraine is against the return of Russian athletes,” Xantaki said, “but international or national decisions are not made based on the feelings of the victim, laws should play a role.”
“How will this help Ukrainians?” Xantaki asked and noted that Russian athletes need to be separated from the state.
