UN Court calls on Azerbaijan to unblock Lachin corridor

The International Court of Justice ruled that Baku must ensure the unhindered movement of people and vehicles along the Lachin corridor, which it has been blocking since December, informs TASS.
“Azerbaijan must take all measures at its disposal to ensure the unimpeded movement of people, vehicles and goods in both directions along the Lachin Corridor,” the court’s president, Joan Donoghue, read out the ruling.
As the agency notes, Armenia initiated legal proceedings with Azerbaijan in the International Court of Justice back in September 2021. It is taking place in accordance with the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Yerevan considers Baku guilty of racial discrimination, which manifested itself, among other things, during the armed conflict in the fall of 2020. At the same time, Baku claims that Armenia is committing discriminatory actions in the region against Azerbaijanis.
Since December 12, 2022, Azerbaijan has blocked the Stepanakert-Goris highway in the Lachin corridor. This is the only transport artery that connects the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) and Armenia. According to the Azerbaijani side, the pretext for blocking was the need to check the cargo for the export of gold from mines actually controlled by the NKR.
On February 16, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that Armenia sent Azerbaijan new proposals for a peace agreement between the countries. The document was also sent to the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, the prime minister added.
