Countries can cut plastic pollution by 80% in less than two decades, according to a new UN Environment Program report.
Plastic pollution is a scourge that affects every corner of the world, from the Arctic to the oceans to the air. CNN.
Garbage even changes ecosystems. Scientists recently discovered rocks made of plastic on a remote Brazilian island, and parts of the Pacific now have so much plastic circulating that communities of coastal creatures thrive thousands of miles from their home.
The past few decades have seen a meteoric rise in the production of plastics, especially single-use plastics, with waste management systems not keeping pace. In 2021, the world generated 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste.
Global plastic production will triple by 2060 if no action is taken.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch has become so huge and permanent that it has a thriving coastal ecosystem, scientists say.
The UNEP report aims to offer governments and businesses a roadmap to drastically reduce plastic pollution levels. It focuses on three main strategies: reuse, recycling and alternative materials.
