In Kyiv and the Kyiv region on October 11, an air raid alarm sounded again. In the capital, where power facilities were hit by high-precision weapons the day before, there are sharp voltage drops in the power grid. At night, the city is plunged into darkness. Disabled street lighting and elevators in high-rise buildings. The people of Kiev told MK about the situation in the capital.
“On October 10, Kyiv was under shelling for almost the entire day, and on October 11, rocket arrivals were only in the Kyiv region,” says Ilya, a resident of Kiev, who previously had a business both in Russia and Ukraine. – In Kyiv, three thermal power plants were broken on October 10. The largest of them is located on the left bank, they haven’t said how damaged it is yet, because they couldn’t put it out for a very long time. One of the arrivals happened two kilometers from my girlfriend’s store in the center of Kyiv, the glasses, surprisingly, all remained intact. While the building of the 101 Tower business center, where the office for the sale of electricity to Europe is located, was damaged very close. (There is also a department of law enforcement agencies of Ukraine. — Auth.) The purpose of the shelling is clear. Apparently, they want Ukraine to switch to internal problems. At the same time, there was no such reaction as on February 24. We’ve been through a lot in these months.
– Are there any shortages of gasoline in Kyiv?
“People have learned a lot from us. Remembering February 2022, what was the shortage of gasoline then, everyone then bought it, made a reserve. After the rocket arrivals, there was still pandemonium at gas stations, and, for example, on October 11, I refueled a full tank without any queue. Gasoline prices are constantly creeping up. Now it costs 53 hryvnia per liter ($1.44, 89.7 rubles). Tellingly, they began to dilute gasoline mercilessly, although they are trying to fight it.
– Many tried to leave Kyiv after the shelling?
– The most nervous and restless, of course, withdrew from their seats. The roads were lined with cars. But among them were not refugees from the first wave, who hastily left Kyiv in February. Those who then drank to the fullest, stood at the border in traffic jams for two or three days, lost all their savings, then returned through checkpoints, having exhausted all their nerves, and now they do not think about leaving. They have already “stuffed bumps” in a foreign land. Now others have decided to try their luck. But the current exodus, of course, cannot be called a massive one.
So the streets are not empty?
– There are a lot of cars on the roads, there are even small traffic jams. People travel at their own risk. We began to treat death differently, now it is always there. People are accustomed to military action. As there is advertising blindness, when consumers do not perceive, do not pay attention to advertising, so we now have violent blindness.
Ilya says that in Kyiv everyone is now holding on to work with their hands and feet.
“People thought about security for the first six months. And when the money ran out, security faded into the background. Jobs are constantly being cut, everyone is now very afraid of losing their jobs. Everyone plows, whether there is a threat of shelling or not, they go to work. In place of the one who decides to hide, wants to rest, five will come.
Schoolchildren, as Ilya says, will be on distance learning until Friday.
How is the electricity situation?
– The mayor’s office has published a schedule of rolling blackouts by district. But he, judging by the conversations with colleagues and acquaintances, is not respected. In some areas, the light both disappeared and did not appear again. The authorities issued an appeal, asking at peak times, from 17:00 to 21:00, to reduce electricity consumption as much as possible. I contacted a friend who lives in Lviv, they generally have complete darkness in the city and cellular communication is very weak.
Are the products left in the stores?
– After the rocket arrivals, many rushed to the shops. This is the first, natural reaction. This is especially true for older people who stuffed bags on wheels with bags of sugar and cereals. From the small shops that are located in the sleeping areas, of course, everything was swept away. The chain stores were also pretty empty, but the very next day all the shelves were again filled with everything you need. The wave of panic subsided quickly. A huge amount of humanitarian aid was brought to Kyiv. There should be no interruptions in food supply. Prices are going up, of course. But still, going out to eat here is not as expensive as in Russia. You have to pay about 500 rubles to have lunch somewhere in a cafe plus drink coffee. This is 300 hryvnia. With this money you can eat in a restaurant.
Ilya says that since 2014, the people of Ukraine have been well brainwashed. Residents of Kyiv, for example, can spontaneously gather on the street in a large group and sing the national anthem of Ukraine. It is not surprising that with such treatment, people are ready to endure a lot even now.
