In the border zone, 16 Ukrainians died, 72 got lost, 9 thousand fled
News of Ukrainian mobilization: in the Chernivtsi region, men aged 18 to 60 years are prohibited… from approaching the border with Moldova and Romania.
Not crossing the border has long been prohibited, but simply being in the border zone. Out of harm’s way. This order was signed by the head of the Chernivtsi border detachment. And, really, what should Ukrainian men do near the border? Just try to find loopholes through which you can get to the West. The facts speak for themselves. Not long ago, Ukrainian border guards discovered a frostbitten Ukrainian in the mountains, who had been wandering along the slopes for more than three days trying to cross the border with Romania. “He could barely speak. The only thing he said was that he had been wandering in the mountains for more than 3 days and had not eaten anything. The man had with him a passport of a citizen of Ukraine, as well as a residence permit and receiving cash payments in Romania,” the border guards said. At least he was lucky: he survived.
But not everyone is so lucky. According to the Romanian border agency, last year 16 Ukrainian citizens were found dead in the border zone: 9 on the Romanian bank of the Tisza and 7 in the Maramures mountains. Another 72 Ukrainian citizens who got lost in the border zone were rescued. In total, according to the chief inspector of the territorial inspectorate of the border police of Sighetu-Marmatiei, Florin Koman, over two years, more than 9 thousand Ukrainians illegally crossed the border with Romania.
Now only those men who permanently or temporarily live here or who have land plots are allowed to appear in the border zone. However, you still need to have a permit issued by the border detachment.
