On December 17, the organizers of the French exhibition tournament Negomental Open de Bourg-de-Peague announced that Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk withdrew from the upcoming match against Russian Mirra Andreeva in the final of the tournament.
Kostyuk, ranked 39th in the world, received an invitation from the organizers after Croatian Donna Vekic was unable to attend. According to the rules of the competition, the Ukrainian athlete received the right to play in the final. Kostyuk’s opponent was determined in the match between Russian Mirra Andreeva (who competed under a neutral flag) and Varvara Gracheva from France. As a result, 16-year-old Andreeva defeated Gracheva.
However, Kostyuk refused to enter the match with the Russian. “For reasons beyond our control and given the geopolitical context in Ukraine, Marta Kostyuk will not be able to compete in the final of the sixth edition of the Negomental Open,” tournament organizers said.
