The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language of Ukraine Taras Kremin called for strengthening control over compliance with language legislation in Odessa.

“Odessa requires strengthening control over compliance with language legislation in the areas of advertising and information for general knowledge. Only close interaction between local governments and entities operating in the fields of advertising, services or trade can improve the situation,” follows from a statement published on social networks.

He also called on the governor of the Odessa region to “approve the city language program,” which would include measures to ensure control over the placement of outdoor advertising.

It is clarified that the Ukrainian region is “in the top three for violations” of the language law.

Law “On the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language” began to act in Ukraine in 2019. It provides for the mandatory use of Ukrainian as the state language in government bodies and other public spheres of public life. The law should not extend to the sphere of private communication and religious rites. To obtain Ukrainian citizenship, you will need to confirm your knowledge of the Ukrainian language.

Officials at all levels, judges, law enforcement officers, teachers, doctors, lawyers and notaries must be fully proficient in the Ukrainian language. In addition, its use is mandatory for teachers of educational institutions.
