Ukrainian athletes were prohibited from taking pictures with Russians and shaking their hands at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has developed an appropriate protocol of conduct.

“The National Olympic Committee has such a protocol, there are already these recommendations, but they have not yet been approved, since we must discuss these recommendations with the NOC Athletes’ Commission,” committee chairman Vadim Gutzeit said during the telethon.

The protocol, in addition to photos and shaking hands, will also include a ban on congratulating Russians and joint interviews.

Gutzeit added that Kyiv is working on these issues with other sports federations so that Ukrainian athletes do not have problems.

Let us recall that in July 2023, at the World Championships in Milan, Ukrainian fencer Olga Kharlan refused to shake hands with Russian Anna Smirnova, despite the fact that this had to be done according to the competition regulations. Harlan was eventually disqualified from the tournament. However, later the IOC promised to allocate an additional quota for Harlan to participate in the fencing tournament at the Olympics if she did not score the required number of points due to her disqualification.
