At the initiative of the Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine and President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) Vadym Gutsait, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has decided to ban Ukrainian athletes from participating in tournaments where athletes from Russia or Belarus will compete. The protocol decision adopted at a government meeting applies to all competitions, including qualifying starts for the 2024 Olympics.
Oleg Nemchinov, Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, said that the participation of Ukrainian athletes in competitions where athletes from Russia and Belarus will be represented could lead to the deprivation of national federations of their status. Without this status, Ukrainian federations will not be able to hold national competitions, assign sports categories and titles, and also represent Ukraine at international competitions.
“Today, at a government meeting, a protocol decision was made on the proposal of Gutzeit’s colleague that we participate only in qualifying competitions. [на Олимпиаду 2024]where there are no Russians,” Nemchinov said.
