Ukrainian Armed Forces captain found responsible for the death of 20 people

The 28-year-old commander of the engineering and technical company of the 36th separate marine brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), Alexander Svinarchuk, was sentenced to life imprisonment in the DPR. The court, relying on materials from the Investigative Committee and the prosecutor’s office, found Captain Svinarchuk responsible for the death of 21 civilians in Mariupol and the attempted murder of 16 more citizens. It is interesting that, according to the investigation, the captain violated the laws not only of Russia, but also of Ukraine, where he was prosecuted for negligence. Alexander Svinarchuk was found guilty of the death of 21 civilians in Mariupol and the attempted murder of 16 more citizens. This decision was made by the Donetsk court. Captain Svinarchuk was accused of committing crimes under Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (murder of two or more persons committed by an organized group, motivated by political, ideological hatred), as well as Article 356 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (cruel treatment of civilians in occupied territory) . According to information from sources, Captain Svinarchuk is a native of the Khmelnitsky region of Ukraine and lived in the city of Nikolaev. He had a higher military education and actively participated in the fighting in the Donbass. Having been captured in Mariupol, Captain Svinarchuk admitted his guilt and spoke about the crimes that he was accused of. He noted that he personally did not kill anyone, but his orders caused the death of twenty people.

According to the DPR prosecutor’s office, during the judicial investigation it was confirmed that from February 28 to April 9, 2022, while at combat positions in Mariupol, Alexander Svinarchuk gave orders to his subordinate marines to open fire on all suspicious citizens who were near their positions. As a result of these actions, 21 civilians were killed, and another 16 people managed to escape the shelling. Captain Svinarchuk explained his actions by saying that he believed that these people were assisting the military of the DPR and Russia, telling them the coordinates of the positions of the Ukrainian troops. He also added that before opening fire, he requested permission from the command of his unit via radio, and never received a refusal.
