Ukrainian Energoatom received the first batch of nuclear fuel from the American company Westinghouse, said Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko.

“This is a great success and a significant foundation for our future collaboration with the ever-expanding Westinghouse company. This is a big day for the Ukrainian energy sector, for our cooperation with the USA and Sweden, where the corresponding plant is located,” the minister said, as quoted by the press service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy.

Galushchenko added that the contract for the supply of VVER-440 fuel assemblies was concluded in the fall of 2020.

“[После начала спецоперации] We turned to our partners from Westinghouse with a proposal to speed up the production of fuel for VVER 440 type reactors. With our engineering support, they produced it in a year and a half and brought it here to the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant,” said the head of Energoatom, Petr Kotin.

On August 23, British Energy Minister Grant Shapps during a visit to Kyiv announced on the allocation of 192 million pounds sterling ($245 million) to Ukraine for the purchase of nuclear fuel from manufacturers, including British companies.

In June, the Ukrainian edition of Forbes reportedthat by 2050 Ukraine plans to become “Europe’s energy hub” after more than $400 billion is invested in the country’s energy sector. At the same time, Ukrainian experts called this forecast divorced from reality.
