The modified FAB-500 aerial bombs used by the Russian military during special operations are almost impossible to counter. About it stated representative of the air forces of the armed forces of Ukraine (UAF) Yuriy Ignat in an interview with The Washington Post.
According to the publication, the modified FAB-500 were first used in the spring of 2023. They are distinguished by the fact that they glide rather than fall towards their target.
These modifications gave Russia a key advantage over Ukrainian air defenses. Russian planes fly at an altitude of more than 9 km and drop bombs approximately 50 km from the border. Then the bombs fly another 20 km across the territory of Ukraine, Ignat explained.
“Theoretically, these bombs can be countered, but they are extremely difficult to shoot down, almost impossible,” added the Ukrainian Armed Forces representative.
FAB-500 is a Soviet aircraft bomb with a high-explosive warhead weighing 500 kg, adopted for service in 1954. The bomb is unguided, has one nose fuse and is compatible with most Soviet aircraft. After the collapse of the USSR, large stocks of FAB-500 remained in Russian warehouses, notes The Washington Post.
