Over almost two years of fighting, the Ukrainian economy has shrunk by 30%, said Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmyhal. In addition, during the military conflict, 10 million people left the country.

“We have lost 30% of our economy, about 20% of our territories and lost 3.5 million jobs,” Mr. Shmygal told a Japanese TV channel NHK. The Ukrainian Prime Minister arrived in Tokyo the day before, on February 19.

Denis Shmygal noted that during the fighting, Ukraine’s infrastructure was seriously damaged. According to him, damage was caused to almost 2 million households, about 8.4 thousand km of roads were damaged.

The Prime Minister noted that, according to Ukrainian authorities, 10 million people have left the country. “They cannot return to Ukraine from the European Union, from all over the world, due to security problems. We have all possible types of air defense systems provided by our partners. But, unfortunately, the production of ammunition around the world, including the EU, is not large enough to supply the required amount of ammunition to Ukraine,” he added.

On February 19, a Japanese-Ukrainian conference on promoting economic growth and reconstruction in Ukraine was held in Tokyo. In addition to Denis Shmygal, the event was attended by representatives of about 130 companies from both countries, as well as Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Over the past two years, Japan has allocated $12 billion to the needs of Ukraine. According to estimates of the World Bank, the UN, the European Commission and the Ukrainian government, this is all to restore the Ukrainian economy required $486 billion

The International Monetary Fund predicted that by the end of 2023, Ukraine’s GDP will grow by 4.5%. Previously, the IMF predicted an increase of 1–3%.
