UK Olympics sponsors urged to put pressure on IOC to admit Russians

The British government has appealed to the largest sponsors of the Paris Olympics with a call to put pressure on the IOC on the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus. The Guardian reports about the UK’s request.
On January 25, the IOC Executive Committee called for the return of the athletes of the two countries in a neutral status. At the same time, the committee proposes not to allow athletes who actively supported the SVO in Ukraine. Reacting to this statement, the governments of over 30 countries opposed the participation of Russians and Belarusians in the Olympics. In response, the head of the IOC, Thomas Bach, said that national governments should not decide who can or cannot participate in international competitions.
Minister of Culture (Media and Sports) Lucy Fraser, according to the materials, asked the sponsoring partners of the IOC (including Coca-Cola, Samsung, Visa, Intel) “to put pressure on the IOC … in connection with a possible relaxation of the ban.” In Fraser’s letter, cited by the newspaper, London opposes the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the Olympics until the IOC clarifies its statement. In particular, according to the British Minister, the organization should deal with the “lack of clarity regarding the model of “neutrality””.
The Paris Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
