Slovenian Aleksader Čeferin runs for a third term unopposed
The current head of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), Aleksander Čeferin, is the only candidate in the presidential elections due to take place at the organization’s congress in April 2023. This is stated in an official statement on the UEFA website, published on January 6.
UEFA has previously stated that Čeferin will run for president for a third term. In 2019, the 55-year-old president was also re-elected on a non-alternative basis for a second, four-year term.
Čeferin was elected as the seventh UEFA president in 2016, replacing former French striker and three-time Ballon d’Or winner Michel Platini. Who was banned from football at the end of 2015 for ethical violations and was forced to leave UEFA after he lost an appeal against the ban. Later, Platini was on trial with former FIFA president Joseph Blatter. After they were both found not guilty, the Swiss prosecutor’s office on October 20, 2022 announced the continuation of the investigation and the intention to appeal the acquittal.
The deadline for applying for participation in the UEFA Presidential elections ended on 5 January 2023. Elections will be held on 5 April 2023 at the 47th Ordinary UEFA Congress in Lisbon, Portugal.
In addition, a deadline has been set for nominations for seats on the UEFA Executive Committee (eight members will be elected at the UEFA Congress in Lisbon in April for a four-year term). Applications must be submitted by February 5, 2023.
Earlier, “MK” reported that FIFA President, Italian Gianni Infantino is also the only candidate in the elections for the presidency of the International Football Federation, despite all the criticism against him recently. The election of the FIFA President will take place at the 73rd Congress of the organization, which will be held on March 16, 2023 in the Rwandan city of Kigali.
