UEFA Vice-President apologized for the proposal to admit Russian youth teams

UEFA First Vice-President and head of the Swedish Football Association Karl-Erik Nilsson expressed regret that his position on the admission of Russian national teams was misinterpreted. This is reported Online Swedish Football Association.
Earlier, the UEFA Executive Committee allowed Russian youth teams to participate in international competitions. Athletes under 17 years of age will be able to compete, but without a flag, anthem and outside the territory of their country.
Karl-Erik Nilsson and his Italian colleague Gabriele Gravina voted for the admission of the Russians. Three of the five UEFA vice-presidents voted against – Britons David Gill and Laura McAllister and Pole Zbigniew Boniek.
Karl-Erik Nilsson expressed regret that his position on admitting Russians was misinterpreted. Allegedly, he, as a representative of the Swedish sports movement, does not continue to defend a common position.
The vice-president noted that UEFA will conduct an additional investigation into this issue. It will test whether it is right to punish children for “brutal wars and acts of violence for which adults are responsible.”
