UEFA apologizes for Ukraine flag scandal in Champions League final
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has apologized for the scandal surrounding the flag of Ukraine that occurred during the Champions League final between the English “Manchester City” and the Italian “Inter”, writes the Guardian.
June 10 in Istanbul, Manchester City beat Inter (1:0) and became the winner of the most prestigious tournament in European football. Before the start of the match, two stadium employees (it was reported that one of them had UEFA accreditation) tried to take away the Ukrainian flag from the fan. The fan turned out to be a native of Odessa living in Israel. The incident caused a resonance in Ukraine, Secretary General of the Ukrainian Football Association Yuriy Zapisotsky demanded an explanation from UEFA.
“It was an unfortunate personal initiative of one of the security personnel of the local Turkish police,” said a UEFA spokesman. According to him, when the head of the Turkish police was informed, he asked to immediately return the flag to the fan. “UEFA does not prohibit hanging Ukrainian flags in stadiums,” the official representative of the organization added in the explanation.
