UEFA President Aleksandar Čeferin decided not to seek re-election for a new term

President of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Aleksandar Čeferin said that he does not plan to be re-elected for a new term. The powers of Mr. Čeferin, who has headed UEFA since 2016, expire in 2027. Today, February 8, the UEFA Congress adopted amendments to the charter, allowing the Slovenian specialist to remain as head of UEFA until 2031.
“I’m tired of incomprehensible projects like the Super League. And from many other things, but I am proud to be the captain of a ship that is heading in the right direction. We want to protect the right to love the game. People who love football and work there are not clowns. So I decided six months ago that I would not seek a new term after 2027,” said Alexander Čeferin at a press conference (quoted by RIA Novosti).
In April 2021, 12 of the world’s top clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona, announced that they are establishing their own tournament, not controlled by UEFA – the Super League. The project was immediately criticized by UEFA and the International Football Federation (FIFA). They were later joined by the British, Spanish and Italian leagues. 48 hours after the creation of the Super League, its nine founders decided to go out from the project and it was frozen.
In May 2021, the Super League filed a lawsuit in the EU court against UEFA and FIFA due to violations of competition law. Representatives of the Super League insisted that the organizations used illegal methods to prevent the launch of the new tournament. In December 2023, the European Court found that the actions of FIFA and UEFA violated EU antitrust laws. The court ruled that football clubs can enter any tournament without fear of sanctions from higher international federations.
Alexander Ceferin was elected head of UEFA in 2016. He was re-elected to new four-year terms in 2019 and 2023. The maximum number of presidential terms in UEFA is three. With the adoption of the amendment today, the term from 2016 to 2019 is no longer considered a full term, thus Mr. Čeferin received the right to stand in the 2027 elections.
