Alexei Sorokin, Director General of the Organizing Committee for the preparation of the 2021/22 Champions League final in St. Petersburg, said “Sport-Express”that UEFA paid compensation to the Russian side for organizing the tournament.
The Champions League final was supposed to take St. Petersburg. But UEFA decided to take away the right to host the match from St. Petersburg, citing the aggravation of the situation in Ukraine as the reason. As a result, the final of the most prestigious football tournament took place at the Stade de France (Paris).
UEFA paid all compensation to contractors, Sorokin said. “The issue is closed,” he stressed. “UEFA doesn’t owe anything now.” He added that the amount of compensation was discussed for quite some time, calling the negotiations “normal and working.”
