Spanish club Barcelona could be banned from the Champions League starting from the 2024/25 season due to violations of Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) financial regulations. This was reported by the newspaper Die Welt, citing sources in the club and UEFA.

According to UEFA financial regulations, clubs are required to compensate expenses with appropriate income. Financial statement items estimate a three-year cycle. As Die Welt clarifies, Barcelona’s latest annual report reports revenues in the hundreds of millions of euros, while the document includes irrelevant items – sales of future television and marketing rights, as well as other sports.

These incomes do not affect UEFA’s assessment. According to UEFA sources, the association believes that the club’s financial statements are “a mess.” UEFA is discussing a possible disqualification of Barcelona for two to three years.

In November, UEFA fined Barcelona €500,000 for incorrectly reporting profits from the sale of intangible assets in the 2022 financial year. The club filed an appeal, but it was rejected.
