Ubisoft introduced AI for writing scripts

French video game company Ubisoft introduced new generative artificial intelligence Ghostwriter, designed to make it easier for writers to write lines for non-player characters (NPCs). In the future, it is planned to be integrated into the development of video games by companies and adapted to different settings and features of game worlds.
The Ghostwriter AI was developed by Ubisoft La Forge’s in-house team. Thanks to him, you can set a character, indicate the type of interaction with him and the direction of his remarks, after which the AI will automatically begin to create the most appropriate character comments for the situations. In the future, the writers can either edit or discard certain lines of dialogue. The system is self-learning and learns by pairwise comparison: Ghostwriter offers two options and then takes into account the user’s choice.
La Forge engineers have also created a dedicated Ubisoft Ernestine internal site where developers across the company can share their AI experiences and create derivatives based on Ghostwriter. The developers explain the need for such AI by the fact that in open-world video games the number of NPCs can reach hundreds, which makes it difficult for scriptwriters to write original non-repeating lines for them, and also distracts them from working on the main scenario of the project.
