CNN: U.S. indicts Republican congressman Santos
Rep. George Santos, a New York Republican, has been charged by US authorities with violating campaign finance laws, CNN reported.
The broadcaster cites sources as saying that Santos will appear in court for the Southern District of New York on May 10. The broadcaster also notes that the content of the indictment against the congressman is classified. Santos’ attorney has not commented.
CNN explains that the charges under the US Constitution do not preclude serving as a congressman. A politician will be barred from voting in the lower house of parliament if the nature of the alleged acts would involve a maximum sentence of more than 2 years in prison.
On January 10, Democrats in the House of Representatives of Congress demanded an investigation into Santos, they claimed that he disseminated knowingly false information about his biography. In particular, the legislator was convicted of embellishing information about his education and professional activities.
Santos won the November 2022 midterm congressional elections. New York is one of the states where the Democratic positions are traditionally strong.
